Jay and Silent Bob Reboot

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot

What Can I Say?

What can I say? I like these kind of comedy romps. This movie follows along in the footsteps of the first Jay and Silent Bob movie Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. In this one they find out that a movie studio owns the rights to their name and they decide to go to Hollywood to ruin the movie so it doesn’t get made. Or something like that. Along the way Jay finds out he’s a dad and his character arc centers around that. Bob doesn’t really have a character arc but his alter ego Kevin Smith is in it and he plays a nasty Hollywood director. After watching the movie I still don’t get how going to Hollywood and ruining the movie would get them their names back. Shouldn’t they have just sued the movie studio to allow them to have their names back? I don’t know. It was a flimsy premise.

Better Reviews than Star Wars?

So, with such a flimsy premise how did it end up with better reviews than Star Wars? Wait. What? Wow, if you look on Rotten Tomatoes you will see that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker got a score of 52% from critics and Jay and Silent Bob got a score of 69%! Wow, now I would have expected the audience scores to be higher since the audience that went to Jay and Silent Bob are more forgiving than the audience that went to see Star Wars, but to see that the critics thought it was better really speaks volumes. I hope that Kevin Smith takes that to mean that he should make more movies. Or maybe it was just all the cameos in the movie that tipped the scales.

Star Studded Cast

The cast was amazing in this movie. It included everyone from Matt Damon explaining the plot holes in Dogma to Ben Affleck making fun of Ben Affleck. This was really a who’s who of Hollywood comedic actors coming back to say Hi one more time in a film. Some of these actors I haven’t seen in 25 years, but it was great that they all reprised their roles for this movie. My personal favorite line though came from Kevin Smith’s daughter saying, “It probably has his daughter in it. He puts her in everything.” Ugh, he really does.

Final Thoughts

So would I recommend this movie? No. If you were a fan of the Jay and Silent Bob series of movies (everything from Clerks to Mallrats and Dogma) then sure, but really if you haven’t seen those movies you can’t just jump in here and enjoy it to the fullest. This was an inside joke that happened to be an hour and fourty-five minutes long. It was good for a laugh, but frankly I’ll be watching Star Wars again long before I watch this.
