Square Foot Garden

Loosely following directions that Scott Hanselman has on his site, we decided to start a ‘Square Foot Garden.’ This doesn’t mean plant a one square foot garden, it means setup a large above ground garden and for every square foot in there plant something different. Now because it’s above ground and there’s a weed barrier at the bottom it is actually treated like a very large potted plant. So the dirt mix that I have in there is a Miracle Grow for potted plants. I don’t think there’s enough dirt in there right now so I’ll have to go get a couple/few more bags tomorrow. Scott did three 8 foot by 4 foot gardens. This was far too much for us so I built a single 4 foot by 4 foot garden. If all goes well I’ll build a second one next to it in the full 8 foot by 4 foot si next year.

Here are some photos of the build process.

Got the weed guard down ready to put the dirt in.

All done for now!

All done for now. Time to water it and let it sit overnight.

Tomorrow Inara and Leanne will plant the seeds. I’m not expecting any of this to actually work so late in the year but it’ll give us a start for next spring. The seeds we have are pumpkin, beans, Brussels sprouts, lettuce, carrots and beets. figuring out where to plant what in the 16 1 foot squares will be fun.
