Elisabeth Rohm plays Assistant District Attorney Serena Southerlyn on NBC’s Law & Order. Tonight’s episode was her last on the show. Over the past year her character has had a few ethical arguments with D.A. Arthur Branch (played by Fred Thompson) and A.D.A. Jack McCoy (played by Sam Waterston). These arguments have been getting more obvious with each passing week, but they were never blatantly obvious. Tonight though, D.A. Branch fired Serena because she was letting her emotions water down the evidence against a defendant. So Arthur clearly explained to her that the position she was in could not afford emotions clouding judgment. Then he told her she was fired (albeit in a Donald Trump kind of manner). This is where the story takes a nasty turn. Instead of crying and leaving quietly, Serena says to D.A. Arthur Branch, “Is this because I’m a lesbian?” What?!? Wait, when in all the years of Law & Order has a person’s sexual preference ever, ever been talked about? This is something that has never been discussed. Their department has been a sterilized environment until this comment. How did this question make it into the final shooting script? Is there some bad blood behind Elisabeth Rohm leaving? If so, why did Dick Wolf, et. al. take it out on the viewer? According to NBC’s web site, Elisabeth Rohm is leaving to pursue a movie career. “She can be seen in the upcoming film ‘Miss Congeniality II’ with Saundra Bullock.” Really? She left for that? It better be a hell of a lot better than the first one.
