I have never watched the Jimmy Kimmel show, but it has a rich tradition of controversy. I believe this was the show that ABC got rid of once before because some people complained that he had audience members drinking beer during the show. I think that was just a publicity stunt to get more viewers. This time, though, he went too far. Jimmy Kimmel, a comedian, made a joke at the expense of other people. How dare he? I mean trying to be funny advertising a show that is meant to be funny. Wait, ah, no, that’s not right. Let’s look at what he said, “I’m glad the Lakers are winning because besides the fact that I’m a Lakers fan, I realize they’re gonna burn the city of Detroit down if the Pistons win, and it’s not worth it.” Someone took offence to that? Yes. In fact ABC’s Detroit affiliate, WXYZ-TV, decided not to show the Jimmy Kimmel show that night. They put “The Wayne Brady” show on instead. Going even further ABC itself decided to air a re-run instead. Some references in various news articles claim that after the 1984 World Series win by the Tigers (They actually won a World Series?) riots ensued, and that there is a tradition of Halloween arson fires. So, Jimmy’s comments touched a sore nerve, but were based in reality. Why did he get fired? Last Wednesday he issued the following apology, “What I said about Pistons fans during halftime last night was a joke, nothing more. If I offended anyone I am sorry. Clearly over the past 10 years, we in L.A. have taken a commanding lead in post-game riots. If the Lakers win, I hope to overturn my own car.” Do you see people from LA getting upset over this comment? No. People of Earth! Hear me now and listen to me later. It was a joke. Laugh, cry, or turn the TV off. I don’t care. If you don’t have enough humor to laugh at it, then get out of the way. I think you have gone too far by having Jimmy’s show removed.
